The Scatty Process
All of the ‘findings’ (the bit that goes through your piercing) on ScattyBun earrings are sterling silver
If you don’t have pierced ears, I offer clip-on fittings, but please note that these are rhodium-plated base metal, not silver (they are available in silver, but I don’t offer them as an option because they are expensive. If you would like them, I will obtain them for you, but they will literally double the cost of your earrings (the lowest price I can find them at the moment is around £15 per pair). I can also source gold findings, but I’m not even going to look unless you want me to; the price of silver is bad enough!
All my pieces are hand-cut; I don’t use punches (the only exception is the earrings made up of three tiny domed circles). I use jeweller’s tin snips and either templates I’ve drawn myself on thin acetate, or a plastic stencil.
Once the tin piece has been cut, hole-punched and edge-sanded with fine grade sandpaper (I’m VERY fussy about my edges), I use Renaissance Wax to clean and preserve it. This very fine, microcrystalline wax is used by museums around the world to preserve and protect metal and wooden artifacts. It also gives a fantastic shine to tin earrings!
After the first coat, I’ll do any hammering/shaping/doming, then use the wax again to clean up and give a final polish before mounting on your chosen fittings.
Once completed, your earrings are mounted on a printed card with some details about the tin on the back, I put little silicon stoppers on the ends of the earwires, and pop them in a little gift envelope, which I make out of pretty wrapping paper. A couple of dainty ribbons and a little bunny charm complete the pretty packaging. I use bubble envelopes and only post by Royal Mail 24-Hour Tracked.
